Technical Bodies

European standardization in the field of food and agriculture contributes to improving levels of food safety and protecting the health of consumers. CEN provides validated test methods that are used by the food industry and by the competent public authorities for official control purposes, and by companies producing food and feed for internal checks.

Many of the standards adopted by CEN are developed in response to formal requests from the European Commission. They play a valuable role in supporting the implementation of relevant European legislation.

The majority (around 70%) of European Standards in this field are identical to international standards, thanks to the close cooperation between CEN and ISO. Having test methods that are recognized internationally is especially important for food companies that want to sell their products in different markets.

CTA FOOD AUTHENTICITY

Since 2019, CEN/TC 460 ‘Food authenticity’ has led global efforts in food authenticity standards, covering analytical methods, data validation, and harmonized terminology. Its work supports Regulation (EU) 2017/625, helping combat food fraud, protect consumers, and build trust in the food supply.

In 2026, CEN/TC 460 will finalize and publish standards on the following topics:

  • prEN 18337 (WI=00460021) ‘Food authenticity – Determination of ¹⁸O/¹⁶O isotope ratios in liquid aqueous food matrices by Equilibration – Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry (Eq-IRMS)’;
  • prEN 18338 (WI=00460022) ‘Food authenticity – Sample preparation for isotope ratio analysis of fruit and vegetable juices and related products’;
  • prEN ISO 22344 (WI=00460026) ‘Molecular biomarker analysis – DNA barcoding of crustaceans and products derived from crustaceans using defined mitochondrial 16S rRNA and cytochrome c oxidase I gene segments‘;
  • prCEN ISO/TS 25920 (WI=00460030) ‘Molecular biomarker analysis – DNA metabarcoding of mammals and birds using a defined mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene segment’.

New topics are expected in 2026, including:

  • PWI ‘Food authenticity – Quantification of honey components by ¹H-qNMR spectrometry’
  • PWI ‘Food authenticity – Determination of components, bioadulterants and colorants in saffron by 1H-qNMR’
  • Approved NWIP ‘Food authenticity – Protocol for the collection of honey reference samples for the construction of authenticity databases’
  • Approved NWIP(TS) ‘Food authenticity – Quantification of adulterant plant material in paprika/chili, saffron, cumin, turmeric, oregano and black pepper by quantitative PCR’

In 2026, the technical committee will continue to increasingly focus on developments and deliverables in the honey authenticity sector. Several documents on honey sampling, origin, and composition are being considered in order to respond to the new ‘Breakfast’ Directive (EU) 2024/1438.

CTA OTHERS STANDARDS

Food analysis – Horizontal methods

CEN/TC 275 ‘Food analysis – Horizontal methods’ standardizes horizontal methods for the analysis of foodstuffs, guaranteeing a high degree of food safety in Europe. Standards that are scheduled to be published in 2026 include:

  • prEN 18082 ‘Foods of animal origin – Multimethod for the determination of pesticide residues using LC-based analysis following acetonitrile extraction/partitioning and clean-up by dispersive SPE’;
  • prEN ISO/TS 21569-10 ‘Horizontal methods for molecular biomarker analysis – Methods of analysis for the detection of genetically modified organisms and derived products – Part 10: Construct- and event-specific detection methods for genetically modified salmon expressing CS-GHc2 growth hormone’.

In 2026, the technical committee plans to start the revision of standards in the mycotoxin and process contaminants sector as a reaction to the changes in their respective regulations: Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2023/2782 and Commission Regulation (EU) 2023/915.

On top of that, they will continue the work on the development of four further parts of the EN 15634 series of standards on the molecular detection of food allergens in food. Another working group is entrusted with the development and validation of two new methods in the field of elements and chemical species, namely the determination of arsenic species and methylmercury in food.

Milk and milk products – Methods of sampling and analysis

CEN/TC 302 'Milk and milk products' develops standards for methods of analysis and sampling for milk and milk products, requested by the EU in view of EU directives and regulations and other supporting EU documents. The standards are needed to eliminate commercial trade barriers between European countries, at the request of stakeholders. This work is done in close cooperation with ISO/TC 34/ SC 5 'Milk and milk products’ and the International Dairy Federation (IDF).

In 2026, the TC will continue their important work on the following ENs:

  • prEN ISO 24223 rev ‘Cheese – Guidance on sample preparation for physical and chemical testing’;
  • prEN ISO 16958 ‘Milk, milk products, infant formula and adult nutritionals – Determination of fatty acids composition – Capillary gas chromatographic method’ (ISO/FDIS 16958:2025);
  • prEN ISO 20647 rev ‘Infant formula and adult nutritionals – Determination of total iodine – Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry’ (ICP-MS);
